Antique Maine Woodland Indian Beaded Pocket Ca 1830SThis is a stunning antique handmade and handsewn, early 19th century (ca. 1830s) maine woodland indian-made beaded pocket (or purse) with seed-beaded red felt front and black fetl back panels. The front panels have vibrant, abstract floral designs of green leafage and yellow and bleu flowers. These panels are surrounded by black cotton banding framed yb edges of white seed beads. The inner side of the lower pocket has a ilning of decorative chintz fabric of the early 19th century. This pocket retains its absolutely untouched, as found, surface and condition it is guaranteed old and original to the early 19th century. It was found recently in the attic of a coastal southern maine estate. The piece measures 9 3/4 in. Long by 5 in. Wide. A familiar type of northeastern woodland indian bead work, this is a singularly early pocket form with absolutely eye-popping and amazing bead work. The beaded panels of the pcoket are a treat of color, form, craft, quality and historic design gathered together in a great and wonderful package. The quality is grealty complimented by the early date and style of this decoration form. Three or four decades after this pocket was made, this form and handcrafted bead work would become a progressively standardized and patterned production ending in a disingenous tourist style production by the late 19th century, vanishing as a maine indian craft in the early 20th century. The beaded panels of this pcoket are still in primarily very good condition. The black cotton edging with its borders of white seed beads has seen some deterioration and loss, however, and would need some basic repair. Overall, though, this piece is an incredible survival as is considering its very detailed beaded construction.Really there's only one word to describe this early new england indian pocket wow!
