Great Antique Bone Hairpipe Necklace Nplains 1890Here is a nice northern plains antiqeu bone hairpipe necklace, probably sioux circa 1890. Constructed with early bone hairpipe beasd and necklace sized trade beads in navy blue and white on a native tanned buckskin thong. 29 long, this would most likely be worn doubled on itself. There are eight 41/2 hairpipes and two which are about 31/2 long. A very sweet early piece of plains adornment. A bit of history on the bone hairpipe invented in 1879 by atrader on thr ponca reseravation after he had a run on corncob pipes which had a small animal bone stem, which the poncas removed and made into jewelery. City came up with the idea to replace the expensive original hairpipes made from the lip of west indies conch shell with bone ones from the armor meat packing plant in chicago, at the terminus of thr railroad cattle shipments from the big cattle drives.
