Native American Iroquois Beaded Whimsey Bird Pillow NorThis auction is for a native american beadwork whimsey c. 1870. This piece measures 10 high x 9 wide x approx. 3 deep. This piece depicts a bird with leaves ovre a basket. The bird is beaded in clear beads with blue beads for a wing. The leaves and flowers above his head are clear nad the leaves to the right of his body are yellow and white. The bird is perched on a 'basket' that is beaded in clear beads with gray cut beads as accents.
The entire scene is bordered with leaves in red, clear, green, and blue beads, with cut glass gray, green and blue beads at their centers. The bird and flower are on a purple cloth base. The entire pillow is bordered with two rows of white beads, and a fringe in clear beads. This piece is in veyr good condition. There is no bead loss to the main decoration bird, 'basket, ' and flowers. There is bead loss to the fringe of the pillow and a short 'row' of the white border, as shown in the picture. Theer is some fraying and loss of nap on the purple velvet fabric.
This loss is age appropriate and does nothing to deter from the beauty of this piece. The back of the pillow, done in a yellow cloth has some fraying, but there is a colorful under-fabric beneath. Thsi piece is tightly stuffed with cotton. This peice is very heavy. I have been a collector and restorer of these pieces for many years. Unfortunately, i need to let some of them go. If you are a restorer of textiles this is a great piece for you the only thing needing work is the fringe. fI you are beginning collector, or adding to an existing collection these are some great pieces that need a new home.
